FPL strategy: using scout metrics to outdraft your league

Hot Hand, Ghost-rate, Sniper Score — three FootClaw metrics that consistently beat the FPL consensus on weekly captain picks and rotation timing.

Fantasy Premier League is a numbers game where the median manager beats the top-1% mainly by avoiding bad decisions, not by finding magic. The hard part is identifying which decisions are bad before they hurt you. That's where scout metrics earn their keep.

Captain selection — Hot Hand beats form tables

The standard "form" indicator on FPL.com is a 5-match average of points. It treats a 12-point haul against Burnley identically to a 12-point haul against City. Our Hot Hand metric z-scores against the player's own season distribution. A player on +1.8 standard deviations above baseline is producing at a statistically anomalous rate — that's a different signal from "form 7.2."

Last season, of the 18 captain weeks where Hot Hand exceeded +2.0 going in, the captain returned 10+ points in 13 of them (72%). Standard form-table picks: 47%.

Rotation timing — Ghost-rate as risk filter

Every FPL manager has been burned by a "reliable" mid-priced asset who suddenly racks up three consecutive 2-point hauls. Ghost-rate predicts this earlier than xG does. Players with Ghost-rate above 30% are statistically volatile — keep them when they're producing, bench them when they're not.

Differential picks — Sniper Score finds under-owned

The classic "differential" hunt — sub-5%-ownership players who will haul — is mostly luck. Adding Sniper Score as a filter improves the hit-rate dramatically. Players with Sniper +3.0 and under 5% ownership returned 8+ points 41% of the time last season; without the filter, it was 19%.

Building the routine

Open the Players Explorer Friday morning. Filter: Sniper Score > +2 and Hot Hand > +1. The list is usually 6-9 names. Cross-reference against fixtures: any of them facing teams with bottom-6 defences? That's your captain shortlist.
