Greatest Sniper Scores of the modern era

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Salah, Suárez — running our Sniper Score back through 16 seasons, ranked.

Sniper Score = (goals - xG) + (xGOT - xG) × 0.5. Rewards both clinical finishing and clean shot placement. Running it backward through 16 seasons.

The top 10

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo 2014-15 (Real Madrid) — +18.4. Outrageous finishing season; 48 LaLiga goals on 38.2 xG.
  2. Robert Lewandowski 2020-21 (Bayern) — +14.7. 41 Bundesliga goals on 31.8 xG. The Müller record season.
  3. Luis Suárez 2015-16 (Barcelona) — +13.9. Pichichi season, 40 goals.
  4. Mo Salah 2017-18 (Liverpool) — +12.1. Debut PL season, 32 goals.
  5. Cristiano Ronaldo 2011-12 (Real Madrid) — +11.8. 46 LaLiga goals.
  6. Lionel Messi 2011-12 (Barcelona) — +11.3. The 50-goal season.
  7. Erling Haaland 2022-23 (Manchester City) — +10.4. Debut PL, 36 goals.

What's striking

Six of the top 10 are from the 2014-2022 window. The 2023-2026 window has Haaland but otherwise looks quieter — possibly because GK quality has improved (xGOT rises) which compresses Sniper Score for everyone.
